If you have a facebook page and would like to take a look, please click below. We encourage you to send this message to all the other Trendsetters in your school so they too can join our facebook group.

Tips

  • When meeting with your student, have him/her sit on your left side so that you do not block the student's view as you read and work in the student activity book.
  • Please pay special attention to the Word Workout. These are words that your student might not be familiar with.
  • Reading aloud increases the student's background knowledge, expands the student's vocabulary and allows the students to observe a good reader who models expressive reading.
  • Discuss the article after reading. Encourage the student to share a favorite part of the article and have the student illustrate the main idea of the article.
  • Preview the lesson and activities before you meet with your student. Practice reading the article to ensure you are comfortable with the content.
  • Relate the text to the student's life. This helps the student retain and comprehend information. Encourage the student to ask questions. Let the student know that he/she may interrupt you with questions.
  • When writing in the Student Book, make sure the student has plenty of room on the table and that the chair and table are at comfortable heights.

Remember

  • Bring pens and pencils to each mentoring session, as writing activities are integrated into each lesson.
  • Markers and highlighters are also suggested to place emphasis on sections of text or special interest words.
  • Be enthusiastic! Show that you are excited about reading and your mentee will become excited, too.
